Constellation's Conowingo Dam Celebrates National Hydropower Day with Launch of Educational Video Series

August 26, 2022
Today (Aug 24), Constellation joins the National Hydropower Association (NHA) in celebration of National Hydropower Day, part of a national effort to highlight the benefits the hydroelectric industry provides. This year's theme is "Cleaner Communities," highlighting the ways hydro-electric power strengthens America's small towns and local communities.

The Conowingo Dam, Maryland's largest renewable energy resource, generates up to 572 MW of reliable pollution-free electricity, which powers nearly 165,000 homes and provides $273 million in economic benefits to the state. Perhaps less well known are the various ways the Conowingo Dam helps protect the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, including wildlife in and around the Susquehanna River.

Recently, Constellation launched a new video series, titled "Dave Down by the Dam," featuring its own Dave Marcheskie, aimed at educating viewers on how the Conowingo Dam enhances river health, water quality, and recreational benefits.

The first video in the series detailed how dam personnel carefully remove debris following a storm. This video has received more than 100,000 views on Facebook and Twitter. Today, we are proud to release the next "Dave Down by the Dam" video in recognition of National Hydropower Day.

"Dave Down by the Dam: Fun and Recreation" showcases how the Conowingo Dam offers numerous recreational opportunities including a swimming pool, among other fun amenities.

"This is a great way to engage our communities and customers on what we do beyond generating clean, reliable electricity," said Dusty McKeown, Conowingo Dam Plant Manager. "We hope people enjoy Dave Down by the Dam' and understand we aim to build cleaner Maryland communities in multiple ways."

The third video in the series will showcase how the Conowingo Dam protects aquatic and shoreline habitats and works to improve overall water quality. This video will be released in the near future.

As the Conowingo Dam will soon celebrate its centennial birthday in 2028, Constellation continues to seek ways to enhance and strengthen our operations and environmental stewardship, following FERC's approval of a new 50-year license in 2021.
