PROTEUS MARINE RENEWABLES
SKF backs Proteus in Global Campaign to Power the Tidal Energy Transition

July 4, 2025

SKF is helping Proteus Marine Renewables turn tidal energy into a reliable and scalable source of clean power.

Building on more than a decade of collaboration, SKF has launched a global campaign highlighting its support for Proteus's AR-series tidal turbine systems. The campaign reflects the confidence of a world-class industrial partner in the reliability, performance, and commercial readiness of our technology.

The two companies have a longstanding partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2024. SKF has played a vital role not only in supplying key components, but also in helping us optimise and de-risk the AR-series as we scale toward commercial deployment.

SKF's contributions go well beyond individual parts. The company has supported the specification, development, and supply of bearings and seals for all major turbine mechanisms, including the main rotor shaft assemblies, the yaw mechanism that turns the turbine to face the tidal stream, and the pitch system that adjusts blade angles for optimal performance.

"We need suppliers that understand the demands of the subsea environment, where the consequences of key component failure are impactful," says Drew Blaxland, CEO of Proteus Marine Renewables. "SKF has played a significant role in our risk reduction efforts, and their input extends far beyond component supply."

Previously, SKF provided complete main rotor shaft assemblies for prototype turbines. Building on that foundation, the two companies are now collaborating on integrated yaw and pitch assemblies and, ultimately, a fully integrated powertrain solution for the next generation of Proteus turbines.

Helping to redefine the capability of renewable ocean energy systems, SKF's support will enable a minimum 59MW addition to the existing 6MW pilot array at MeyGen. These deployments represent the first stage of an ambitious scaling plan, aligned with further investment and innovation through 2025 and beyond.

As we transition from development to full-scale deployment, the support of trusted supply chain partners like SKF will be critical. By the end of this decade, we aim to deploy at least 40 commercial-scale 3MW turbines across Scotland, France, and Japan, each generating clean power for approximately 3,000 homes.

SKF's support strengthens Proteus's ability to scale with confidence, delivering high-performance systems into some of the most demanding marine environments in the world.
