European secondary fuels specialist, Geminor, has signed an agreement with the government of Guernsey to manage the export and recovery of circa. 20,000 tonnes of processed refuse-derived fuel (RDF) per annum.
The three-year contract, which commences in October 2018, will see RDF shipped from Guernsey's waste transfer station at Longue Hougue to the Jönköping Energi cogeneration facility in Torsvik, Sweden, as one of a group of Geminor's contracted offtakers which will recover the RDF. The resulting renewable heat and power will provide energy for thousands of homes and businesses across the country.
James Maiden, UK Country Manager at Geminor, commented: "We are looking forward to working in close partnership with the State's government to implement a new, sustainable approach to waste management.
"Rather than relying on landfill, Guernsey's waste will become a highly beneficial source of green energy. What's more, through the use of empty load logistics, the entire project will result in minimal CO2 emissions - a highly sustainable and economical solution."
