Modern Energy Management (MEM), a specialist in developing, building and operating investment grade renewable energy projects in emerging markets, announced it has successfully completed its asset optimization support for JCM Power's HAWA 50MW wind farm in Sindh, Pakistan.
Over an 18-month period, the scope of work included MEM's assessment of the wind farm's performance. During that process, MEM identified several key opportunities for improvement. With this analysis, MEM developed a corrective action plan to optimize plant performance.
"MEM's services lifted our technical capacity in understanding our plant," said Jon Bahen, VP Assets and Strategic Development, JCM Power. "In our view, MEM's services definitely added value to the overall project."
"MEM was originally hired by JCM Power to conduct technical and commercial due diligence on the acquisition of shares of the project due to our understanding of the Pakistan renewable energy market," stated Aaron Daniels, Managing Director of Modern Energy Management. "This was an extension of our role as Owner's Representative, optimizing JCM's return on investment."
Pakistan has historically been a net importer of energy. However, the combination of oil prices and rising energy demands led the country to set a plan to increase the amount of its energy coming from renewable sources from 4% to 30% by 2030. There is an intermediate goal of 20% by 20205. That opens the door for new renewable energy investments in Pakistan over the coming years.
"Our observation of operating renewable energy plants in emerging markets is that energy production can often be improved. Many investors in these markets typically do not have experience to efficiently optimize these plants," continued Mr. Daniels. "MEM has a proven track record of enhancing renewable energy project financial performance, as demonstrated in our operational assessment of the HAWA project."
One of MEM's services is to provide in-depth analysis of wind farm operations. This includes implementing standard operating procedures to streamline the processes required for management of the wind farm. MEM also trains the operations and management team to identify issues and risks for the project after MEM's involvement.
