MARINE POWER SYSTEMS (MPS)
MPS appoints Quoceant on design and engineering job by MPS

November 1, 2021

Marine Power Systems will be working with Quoceant on the detailed design of their innovative wave energy converter technology.

This follows the successful preliminary design of the power take off system, also undertaken by Quoceant. The engineering team at Quoceant bring huge depth and breadth of experience and a long history of working on marine energy projects where they have proven their ability to take projects from first concepts, through detailed design to deployment and operation.

Quoceant will assist MPS with the detailed design of the wave energy convertor device and they will also support MPS with the procurement, manufacture, assembly, installation and operation of the wave energy convertor at the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP) site in northern Spain.

The wave energy converter has a unique wave energy capture mechanism - directly and efficiently harnessing both the heave and surge energy of the wave. Each energy absorber can capture over a megawatt of power, and each device has multiple absorbers, leading to significant multi megawatt power output per machine.

Graham Foster, CTO at Marine Power Systems commented, "We are really looking forward to continuing our close working relationship with the team at Quoceant to deliver what will be a huge milestone for Marine Power Systems and our mission to unlock the power of oceans. As we embark on this next important phase for the business, we are continuing to build a best-in-class team here at Marine Power Systems. Our partners and suppliers are very much part of that vision, and we are thrilled to have the first-class team at Quoceant on board."

Ross Henderson, Project Lead at Quoceant commented, "We are delighted to support Marine Power Systems in this next stage of their development. Quoceant's growing team of engineers thrive on creating new and enabling technologies and we are proud of our track record across the wave, tidal and offshore wind sectors. We look forward to applying this experience and continuing a great working relationship with the Marine Power Systems team."

Following a recent and very successful equity funding round, where Marine Power Systems raised well over £4.3 million and doubled their original target, the business is moving rapidly towards market readiness.

Marine Power Systems have developed a flexible floating platform technology that is the only solution of its type that can be configured to harness wind and wave energy either as a combined solution or on their own in deep water. Whilst the market for their technology is utility scale, grid connected farms, additional markets include oil and gas platform electrification and the growing hydrogen economy.
