SMEC Signs Major Hydropower Contract in Pakistan

SMEC and EGC (a SMEC subsidiary), in a consortium with two Chinese partners, will provide consultancy services on the Karot Hydropower Project in Pakistan.

Operated by Karot Power Company (KPCL), a subsidiary of China Three Gorges South Asia Investment Limited, the 720MW Karot Hydropower Project is a major energy projectmlocated on the JehlummRiver, 60 km from Islamabad.

The Karot Hydropower Project comprises: a 96m high dam which will span 460 m across the Jhelum River; a reservoir with a total capacity of 152 m3; three

diversion tunnels; four head race power tunnels; large gated spillway; and surface powerhouse. The project will be constructed under an Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) Contract.

SMEC's services includes: design review; project and contract management; construction supervision; and stakeholder engagement.
