Minister Carr Promotes Innovation and Clean Technologies in Canada's Natural Resource Sectors at GLOBE 2016

March 3, 2016

The Honourable Jim Carr, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, participated today (3/2) in the GLOBE 2016 Conference in Vancouver. The GLOBE Conference, the largest event of its kind in Canada, is designed to showcase Canada's environmental technologies and service solutions.

In remarks at a morning (3/2) session on disruptive innovation, Minister Carr highlighted Canada's participation in Mission Innovation as part of the Government's commitment to double its investments to support innovation and the use of clean technologies in our natural resources. Mission Innovation is an initiative of 20 nations that have come together to double their investments in clean energy research and development over five years, encourage private sector investment in clean energy technology and increase collaboration with participating countries.

Later in the day, Minister Carr took part in a session to showcase Canada's global expertise in modern wood construction, which offers many benefits for high-rise residential and commercial buildings due to factors such as wood's intrinsic capacity to sequester carbon. The Minister also underscored Canada's expertise in building higher buildings with technologically advanced, innovative wood products.

During the conference, Natural Resources Canada and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) of the Republic of Korea signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Innovation and Energy Technologies. This builds on a similar agreement, signed in 2011, and will support collaboration on clean energy technologies to enhance energy efficiency, security of energy supply and reduced greenhouse gas emissions in the Republic of Korea and Canada.

In addition to these activities, Minister Carr met with domestic and international participants from across governments and industries to reiterate the Government's commitment to clean technologies in the global fight against climate change. He also took the opportunity to meet with Indigenous leaders to get their views on a number of issues, including clean energy technologies and resource projects within their communities.
