National Grid Ventures and NextEra Energy Resources Celebrate Calverton Solar Energy Center's First Year of Operation

July 20, 2023

Calverton Solar Energy Center is celebrating one year of providing renewable power to thousands of homes and businesses in Riverhead, New York. One year ago, the Calverton Solar Energy Center was commissioned by Long Island Solar Generation, a first joint venture between National Grid Ventures and NextEra Energy Resources. Today, the two companies come together with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and local officials to applaud the project's success. The 22.9 megawatt (MW) solar energy center powers over 4,200 local households and reduces carbon emissions by over 20,000 metric tons per year, equivalent to removing 4,000 cars from the road.

It is also the first solar project launched by Long Island Solar Generation, a joint venture between National Grid Ventures and NextEra Energy Resources. As the owner of the electrical grid on Long Island and the Rockaways, LIPA distributes the clean energy generated from the project to residents. Calverton Solar is dedicated to investing in local communities by bringing clean energy jobs to the region and growing the local economy.

Will Hazelip, President of National Grid Ventures, US Northeast, said: "Today we celebrate Calverton Solar Energy Center's proven success in providing clean, reliable energy to Long Island and in helping achieve New York's renewable energy goals. National Grid Ventures is making significant investments in renewable energy projects including solar, wind, and battery storage because we believe we have an opportunity and responsibility to enable a clean energy future. Calverton is an important part of that. We are proud to work with NextEra Energy Resources and LIPA on this project and look forward to expanding our clean energy portfolio in the region."

Ross Groffman, Vice President of Development, NextEra Energy Resources said: "This solar energy center will generate homegrown renewable energy and provide millions of dollars in additional tax revenue over the life of the project. We are pleased to work with National Grid Ventures and LIPA in helping New York achieve their renewable energy goals and applaud the Governor and LIPA for their commitment to providing renewable energy."

New York State Senator Anthony Palumbo said:

"The Calverton Solar Energy Center is an important part of New York's efforts to reduce the state's carbon footprint while providing clean and renewable power throughout Long Island."

Yvette Aguiar, Riverhead Town Supervisor, said: "In the town of Riverhead, we are proud to host Calverton Solar Energy Center because it will bring New York one step closer to its climate targets. Not only does this center generate clean energy, but it has contributed over $1 million in community benefits to our town. We applaud NGV, NextEra Energy Resources and LIPA for working together to power more than 4,000 homes with clean, solar energy and we celebrate the project's milestone of drastically reducing emissions reductions in its first year."

Built by Long Island's Hawkeye construction company, the 200-acre facility harnesses energy from the sun to power communities served across Long Island and the Rockaways. The 30-year power purchase agreement with LIPA will ensure the delivery of clean energy to support New York State's commitment to achieve 70% renewable energy by 2030.

Tom Falcone, LIPA's Chief Executive Officer, said: "LIPA continues to lead the way in clean energy, with projects like the Calverton Solar Energy Center moving us towards New York's carbon-free electric grid by 2040. As we mark the project's first anniversary, thank you to our partners at National Grid Ventures and NextEra for this example of how we can successfully power thousands of homes with energy sources that are good for our environment while still maintaining reliability and affordability."

At the end of 2021, New York State connected 3.4 gigawatts (GW) of solar. Calverton Solar contributes to the state's goal of reaching 10 GW of installed solar capacity by 2030.

The project made a $1.5 million community benefit payment to the Town of Riverhead, which the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has designated a disadvantaged community, to support community programs for health and welfare, environmental protection, agriculture and open space protection, wireless internet for Riverhead public school students, and job promotion and training.
