EDMONTON
City participating in pilot project to incorporate hydrogen as an additional fuel for City vehicles

August 18, 2023

The City of Edmonton is part of a pilot project that will see four city vehicles integrate hydrogen as an additional fuel source into their diesel engines, which is another step in the City's commitment to transition to a low-carbon future.

As part of the Guardian Hydrogen Diesel System (HDS) pilot program with Diesel Tech Industries (DTI), the engines in two City transit buses and two waste collection trucks will be modified to incorporate hydrogen.

"This partnership with DTI is a step towards Edmonton's commitment to environmental stewardship and the pursuit of testing and using cutting-edge technology to meet our climate action goals," said Heidi Hicks, Director of Municipal Fleet Maintenance at the City of Edmonton. "The pilot project will allow us to learn how to support the future heavy truck fleet transition pathway."

The system will be used on vehicles already in service and is anticipated to instantly reduce diesel usage and emissions, while producing detailed reports for tracking greenhouse gasses. The pilot project provides insights for the City as it works to create a more sustainable waste collection and transit service.

The four retrofitted City vehicles will join a fleet with 60 battery electric transit buses already in service and a hydrogen bus set to hit Edmonton streets this fall.
