ADVANCING GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IN EUROPE
The strategic role of a Geological Service for Europe

June 19, 2025

In this new position paper, we set out a vision for establishing a permanent Geological Service for Europe as a vital platform to provide the scientific tools, data, and policy support needed to integrate geothermal energy into Europe's broader clean energy strategy.

The EU's forthcoming Geothermal Energy Action Plan highlights the role of European geoscientific expertise in providing geological data, models and interactive tools to speed up permitting, reduce risks, and evaluate potential for accelerated deployment and sustainable management of geothermal resources. We are committed to leading the coordination of the "Data Availability" task within the Geothermal Action Plan.

For over a decade, our GeoEnergy Expert Group has been working to provide FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), harmonised data and geoscientific expertise. The goal is to support prediction and sustainable use of geo-energy resources and storage capacities, including geothermal energy.

Building on this solid foundation of expertise, the ongoing Geological Service for Europe (GSEU) project includes, among its broader objectives, a major initiative to integrate and harmonise geothermal subsurface data across Europe. By combining predictive subsurface modelling with innovative approaches, including AI-based tools and geological assessments via the European Geological Data Infrastructure (EGDI), we are delivering an exceptionally clear and comprehensive picture of Europe's geothermal potential.
