Inyanga Marine Energy Group awarded 10MW through CfD to expand their UK tidal energy project

September 4, 2024

Inyanga Marine Energy Group have been awarded a further 10MW for their tidal energy project at Morlais in Anglesey, Wales, through Allocation Round 6 (AR6) of the UK government's Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme.

This expands the scale of their project, which uses their  innovative HydroWing technology, to 20MW, building on their successful 10MW award in the previous allocation round.

The 10MW contract awarded to Inyanga Marine Energy Group for their HydroWing project at Morlais is the largest tidal energy contract awarded for a project through CfD AR6.

Richard Parkinson, CEO of Inyanga Marine Energy Group, says:

"This allows us to build on economies of scale from our portfolio of projects to achieve commercially viable generation projects. This award is a testament to the hard work of our pioneering team and our relentless drive to make HydroWing competitive.

"This enhances our expansion in Anglesey and our commitment to develop the project in partnership with Menter Môn Morlais,  to allow the site to reach its full potential and provide economic growth and benefit to Wales."

The Contracts for Difference is a UK government scheme that aims to bring forward new clean energy, helping the UK achieve energy security.

The Morlais tidal energy project is unique, and the only one of its kind in the world. Run by  Menter Môn Morlais, all  necessary infrastructure is already installed in the zone, including a connection to the national grid and two substations on the shore.

Richard Parkinson adds: "This is a significant milestone for Inyanga Marine Energy Group and a big vote of confidence in our innovative tidal energy technology."

About the Morlais Demonstration Zone

The Morlais site is Europe's largest consented tidal energy scheme,  managed by the social enterprise Menter Môn. Menter Môn manages an area of 35 km2 of the seabed near Holy Island, Anglesey. The scheme has the potential to generate up to 240MW of low carbon clean electricity. The aim is to play a role in tackling climate change while delivering economic and social benefit to local communities and the wider region.

The project and the way in which it will operate is unique, and the only one of its kind in the world. Morlais provides the necessary infrastructure in the zone, including a connection to the national grid and substations on the shore. It rents berths to various turbine development companies so they can use tidal energy to generate electricity.
