Titan Energy Successfully Transforms Two Former Landfills Into Solar Energy Farms

December 10, 2024

Titan Energy, a leading energy consulting firm specializing in electricity and natural gas procurement, onsite generation, and energy efficiency services, is proud to announce the successful transformation of two former landfill sites into solar energy farms. This innovative project turns previously unused land into a sustainable source of renewable power, showcasing the potential for landfill redevelopment.

The solar energy farms, built with American-made products including First Solar's modules and DCE Solar's ballasted foundation systems, were developed in partnership with Verogy, a prominent solar energy developer. Together, the team converted more than 4.5 acres of capped and remediated land across Deep River and Montville, CT, into productive solar energy sites. These projects will generate a combined total of 1,939,650 kWh of clean energy annually enough to power 182 homes each year.

In Deep River, the former 2.3-acre landfill is located at 206 Winthrop Road and has a 675.2 kW DC solar installation. The site will produce 962,730 kWh/year - enough to power 90 average homes for a year.

In Montville, the former 2.4-acre landfill is located at 669 Route 163 and has a 669.6 kW DC solar installation. The site will produce 976,920 kWh/year - enough to power 92 average homes for a year.

Titan Energy was instrumental in bringing these projects to life, guiding the towns of Montville and Deep River through every step of the process. The team began by designing tailored Requests for Proposals (RFPs) specifically for capped landfill sites, ensuring they addressed technical, regulatory, and community requirements. Titan Energy oversaw the competitive bidding process, hosted onsite vendor visits, and conducted detailed evaluations of proposals to help the towns select the best development partners.

"Working with the team at Titan Energy and Verogy made for a smooth and efficient process from inception to production," said Ronald McDaniel, Water Pollution Control Authority Administrator for the Town of Montville, Connecticut. "We were able to take a property that was unusable for anything else and turn into a green energy producing solar array. The Town of Montville will benefit for years to come. We'll be looking to Titan Energy for future opportunities that will reduce our energy costs and reduce our carbon footprint."

The Titan Energy Team also presented project findings to the towns' selectboards, securing necessary approvals, and supported contract negotiations to ensure favorable terms. Even after the contracts were finalized, Titan Energy continued to manage vendor relationships, ensuring timely and successful project execution.

"These projects are a testament to the potential of landfill redevelopment," said Adam Teff, General Manager of TitanGen, Titan Energy's renewable energy company. "By turning capped landfills into renewable energy hubs, we are not only providing sustainable energy but also creating a steady revenue stream for the communities. Every town with a landfill should consider this opportunity."

By managing these projects from start to finish, Titan Energy helped to transform unproductive landfill sites into thriving solar energy farms, creating sustainable, revenue-generating assets for the towns at no cost to taxpayers. Under the Non-Residential Renewable Energy Solutions (NRES) program, which offers enhanced incentives for projects of this nature, the towns have zero ongoing responsibilities other than collecting rent, with the relationship structured as a landlord-tenant agreement between the town and the developer.

"These projects showcase the growing impact of innovative and sustainable energy solutions," said William Herchel, CEO of Verogy. "By collaborating closely with our partners, we have successfully transformed former landfills once underutilized spaces into valuable assets that now generate significant amounts of clean, renewable energy."
