Ilmatar Offshore selects Ramboll Finland for EIA north of Åland

December 23, 2022

Ramboll Finland will be responsible for Ilmatar Offshore's environmental impact assessment on offshore wind projects north of the Åland Islands.

After a careful selection process, Ilmatar Offshore has selected Ramboll Finland as lead consultant for its environmental impact assessment report on the Stormskär and Väderskär project areas north of Åland, Finland. These are both parts of the Norrhavet maritime area which have been specified in the Åland Maritime Spatial Plan as suitable for offshore wind power.

"We have been looking for a company with solid experience in marine infrastructure projects, energy projects and environmental impact assessments. Together with Ramboll, we intend to produce a thorough and comprehensive environmental impact assessment report which involves all the parties concerned and ensures that all studies and reports are carried out correctly right from the outset. We are very pleased with this new partnership, says Stefan Husa, Head of Marine Spatial Planning at Ilmatar Offshore.

At Ramboll Finland, work is led by project manager Axel Andersson:
"We have solid experience in wind power projects. Through this, we have built up expertise that goes beyond our national borders - expertise which will be of great benefit to us in this project. We are delighted to have the opportunity to partner with Ilmatar Offshore, working together to carry forward the green transition," Axel says.

The purpose of environmental impact assessment (EIA) is to reduce or prevent negative impacts from projects which may have significant effects on the environment due to their type, scale or location.
"Our environmental legislation is among the best and most stringent in the world. The EIA process also involves public participation, thus reinforcing the importance of democracy in environmental assessments. A rigorous environmental impact assessment can benefit from the local knowledge and experience of Åland residents, integrating it with scientific and impartial deliberation," says Anna Häger, Regional Manager at Ilmatar Offshore.

The seabed surveys carried out by Ilmatar Offshore in autumn 2022 are a fundamental part of the EIA work. Ramboll Finland will start work on the EIA report right at the beginning of the new year. The open consultations and delineation processes will begin in spring 2023, with the goal being for Ilmatar Offshore's EIA to reach completion in autumn 2024.
