Washington State Department of Commerce Awards Nearly $40 Million to Local Electrification Programs

June 12, 2024

On May 30, 2024, the Washington State Department of Commerce (the State Energy Office) announced $39,575,225 in grants to cities, counties, municipal utilities, and state and federally recognized tribes to support electrification of homes and businesses. The funding, made possible by Washington's Climate Commitment Act, will establish and enhance local programs that provide rebates and incentives to households and small businesses to purchase and install high efficiency electric equipment.

The funds will help support a variety of new and existing electrification programs, including King County's Energize Program, which provides financial support for heat pump installations in low- and moderate-income households.

Commerce received 35 applications for this funding, requesting over $82 million. Funds were distributed with a focus on helping to meet the state's equity and environmental justice goals.

The Climate Commitment Act creates a cap-and-invest system for reducing climate pollution, setting Washington state on the path to reducing climate pollution 95% by 2050.
