Endesa's renewable division, Enel Green Power Spain, produced a total of 418 gigawatt hours (GWh) of green energy in Extremadura in 2020, which is 326% more than in 2019. Endesa's annual renewable energy production in Extremadura could power more than 360,000 homes for one year, which is the energy consumption of the entire province of Badajoz for six months.
Solar energy production experienced the greatest increase in 2020, with 351 GWh, 1,253% more than in 2019, while Endesa's hydroelectric plants in Extremadura produced 66 GWh, a figure similar to that for 2019, when just over 70 GWh were produced.
Renewable potential in Extremadura
In Extremadura, Endesa's renewables division, Enel Green Power Spain, has 7 hydroelectric plants and 7 photovoltaic parks, one of which came into operation in December 2020, adding nearly 50 megawatts of new renewable capacity to Extremadura's distribution networks.
This renewable capacity will increase in 2021, as Endesa is applying for regulatory permission to build up to 15 more photovoltaic projects in the region through its renewable subsidiary Enel Green Power Spain, with a total of 1,150 MW.
Endesa will continue to grow in the renewable sector over the next three years, as announced in its recent Strategic Plan for the 2021-2023 period, which was presented last November. The company has set itself a goal of 30% growth in its renewable energy fleet. Growth that will require an investment of 3.3 billion euros (20% more than in the previous plan) to add 3,900 MW of renewable capacity. As a result, 89% of electricity production on the peninsula will be free of CO2 emissions by the end of 2023.
Through EGPE, Endesa currently manages more than 7,812 MW of installed renewable capacity in Spain, which includes: 4,711 MW conventional hydraulic power; 2,362 MW wind energy, 657 MW solar energy, 79 MW mini-hydraulic energy and 3 MW from other renewable sources.
Enel Green Power, within the Enel Group, is dedicated to developing and operating renewables worldwide, with a presence in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and Oceania. Enel Green Power is a global leader in the green energy sector with an installed capacity of more than 47 GW across a combination of generation resources that include wind, solar, geothermal and hydroelectric, and it is at the forefront of integrating innovative technologies in renewable energy plants.
