ARMSA Academy Partners with Global Solar Council to Power-Up Management Skills Development in the Solar PV Industry

November 5, 2024

ARMSA Academy and the Global Solar Council (GSC) are proud to announce a new partnership to address the critical need for harmonised skills development in the global solar sector as part of the Solar Training Standardisation Initiative (STSI). A recent workforce analysis by McKinsey revealed that of the 5 million solar PV employees, around 1.55 million white-collar workers play a decisive role in operational and safety outcomes yet remain underserved in management skills development.

Solar energy is set to play a pivotal role in the global energy transition, and it is crucial to ensure the availability of a skilled workforce with a trusted certification system capable of designing, installing, and maintaining solar power systems. Despite internal training programs by some manufacturers and utility solar industry players, there is perceived a pressing need for a standardized global training framework. Establishing training standards globally will provide a unified framework that elevates the solar workforce worldwide and supports the just, sustainable and quality development of solar energy.

This partnership introduces ARMSA's suite of management skills products to the global solar market, and the organisation will contribute to the STSI through its steering group, further driving global skills harmonisation.

Khalida Suleymanova, Director and Chief Implementation Officer at ARMSA Academy, said:

"Since 2016, ARMSA has helped high-growth solar companies develop skills to safely design, construct, operate, and maintain utility and commercial-scale solar PV assets."

"Following a significant R&D investment programme, we introduced the world's first management programme for solar developers, asset managers, and operators in 2022 - approved by The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Since its launch, 330 solar professionals from 12 countries have been certificated on our executive and management programmes."

"Our partnership with the Global Solar Council puts our programmes directly in front of 6,000 GSC members, rapidly harmonising management skills globally aimed at improving quality and safety whilst reducing capital and operational costs."

Sonia Dunlop, CEO of Global Solar Council, commented: "It is critical that we keep our 5 million and growing workforce safe, healthy, and skilled to make sure that they can lead in building a better world powered by high-quality solar. With extensive experience developing training programs in the renewables sector, ARMSA Academy is a natural partner for GSC as we embark on our joint mission to now develop global skills training standards that will benefit the people, projects and companies working in solar across the world.

About the Solar Training Standardisation Initiative

The Global Solar Council (GSC) and Global Wind Organisation (GWO), the non-profit organisation that provides this standardisation in the wind industry, have launched the STSI to establish comprehensive training standards for the solar energy industry, akin to those developed by GWO for the wind energy sector. This initiative aims to address the pressing need for a standardised global training framework covering technicians working in solar PV construction, installation, service and maintenance at the utility-scale. These training standards globally will provide a unified framework that elevates the solar workforce worldwide and supports the just, sustainable and quality development of solar energy.
