CLEAN POWER ALLIANCE
Clean Power Alliance Submits Initial Demand Response Resource Bid into the CAISO Wholesale Energy Market Through its Power Response Program

May 13, 2021

Power Response Program Utilizes Smart Thermostats, Solar Plus Storage, and Electric Vehicle Charger Systems to Reduce Stress on the Electricity Grid and Lower Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Clean Power Alliance (CPA), the single largest provider of 100% renewable energy to customers in the United States, successfully submitted its first Demand Resource bid into the CAISO wholesale energy market through its Power Response Program on May 11, 2021.

The CPA Power Response Program is a demand response pilot program which utilizes smart thermostat, solar plus storage, and electric vehicle charger demand reduction programs to help reduce stress on the electricity grid and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

After meeting the required number of enrolled customers, CPA has now successfully started bidding capacity from its Power Response Program into the CAISO market. CPA is using the Proxy Demand Resource (PDR) mechanism, which allows the aggregated energy reductions of the customers enrolled in the program to be treated as a competitive resource in the energy supply market.

"As customer enrollment in the Power Response program continues to grow, the amount of aggregated demand response we can bid through the program also increases," said Ted Bardacke, Executive Director of Clean Power Alliance. "By submitting bids on days when temperatures are particularly high and the grid becomes stressed, we're able to contribute to grid reliability and lower greenhouse gas emissions while paying our customers to reduce their energy usage."

The program, operated through a partnership with Olivine, offers smart thermostat and solar plus storage program options to serve residential customers. The program also offers solar plus storage and electric vehicle charger program options to serve commercial and municipal customers. Participating CPA customers are paid for enrolling in the program and reducing their energy usage during peak energy demand time periods. The program notifies customers about when to reduce their energy usage.

"This milestone demonstrates the ability for all customers to create resilience and sustainability within their community, underscored by the fact that the program has also been successful in its goal to engage and activate low income and Disadvantaged Community (DAC) residents. We have been honored to partner with CPA to bring this vision to life," said Olivine's CEO, Elizabeth Reid.

In addition to its residential and commercial Power Response programs, CPA offers many other local programs to help save its customers money while achieving community goals such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting climate resiliency, creating jobs, and serving CPA's broad and diverse customer base. "Innovative demand response resources like the Power Response program are ways we can continue to increase grid reliability, while lowering greenhouse gas emissions associated with higher evening peak hour demand," added Jack Clark, Director of CPA Customer Programs.
