ACCIONA will supply high-voltage clean energy to all Aena's airports in the Iberian Peninsula

June 6, 2019

ACCIONA has been awarded the largest part of the electricity supplies covered in a tender called by AENA for 2020, with an estimated energy volume of 728 gigawatt hours (GWh).

Specifically, ACCIONA was awarded four of the seven lots presented by the airport operator. They represent 76% of the total energy put out to tender and include high-voltage supplies to all the airports of AENA in the Iberian Peninsula, among them Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat.

The contract will cover one year -2020- with the possibility of an extension for another year, subject to agreement between the two parties.

Like all the energy marketed by ACCIONA, the power delivered to AENA will be certified 100% renewable by the Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC). The use of clean energy at the levels indicated will avoid the emission to the atmosphere of more than 460,000 tonnes of CO2, the main cause of climate change, from power stations fired by fossil fuels, according to the Spanish energy generation mix.

"It is great news that AENA has once again called on ACCIONA to supply 100% renewable energy, and we are delighted to work with such an important client to cover its electricity consumption in a very competitive way while contributing to reducing its carbon footprint at the same time", says Santiago Gómez Ramos, Energy Management Director of ACCIONA.

Supplies to corporations

Through its subsidiary ACCIONA Green Energy Developments, ACCIONA is the leading marketer of exclusively renewable energy in the Iberian Electric Power Market, with forecast sales of over 6 terawatt-hours (TWh) in the current financial year.

The company's present and past client portfolio covers more than five hundred companies and institutions from a wide range of sectors, such as Telefónica, Unilever, Adif, Navantia, RTVE, Agrolimen, Bimbo and Merck. Outside the Iberian Peninsula, the company is also an active trader of renewable energy to corporate clients, signing long-term PPAs with major companies such as Google, Falabella, LATAM Airlines y ENAMI (all in Chile), Cemex (Mexico) and Viva Energy (Australia).

The supply of renewable energy to the corporate sector is a clearly expanding activity, as more and more companies wish to improve the sustainability of their businesses and reduce their energy consumption. Renewable energies such wind power or photovoltaic solar offer clear advantages and interesting benefits at the same time: control of energy costs, reduction of carbon footprint and better reputation and brand image.
