PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR), a subsidiary of PT Pertamina (Persero) under the upstream subholding, is leveraging the largest solar power plant (PLTS) in Indonesia to support its business operations. 64,000 solar panels will be spread over 28 hectares of PHR's area, demonstrating Pertamina Group's commitment to reducing emissions and utilizing new renewable energy.
This PLTS construction is a collaboration between Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (PNRE) and Pertamina Hulu Energi sub-holdings. This 25 Megawatt Peak (MWp) PLTS is located in PHR's oil and gas operational areas, including Rumbai, Duri, and Dumai.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, stated that as a leader in energy transition, Pertamina is promoting new renewable energy utilization, especially for its existing businesses. One such initiative is the solar panels at the PHR complex, which is currently the largest PLTS in Indonesia.
"This PLTS will support operations in the Rokan work area, serving as a showcase for clean and environmentally friendly energy utilization, which also benefits business optimization," explained Fadjar.
The Rokan PLTS represents Pertamina's commitment to supporting the Indonesian government's net zero emission target by 2060. The method used involves building ground-mounted PLTS and installing rooftop solar panels. The energy captured by these solar panels is then converted through inverters, allowing the electricity to be utilized in the Rokan work area.
Being environmentally friendly, this PLTS will result in a long-term reduction in emissions by up to 23,000 tons of CO2 per year and a decrease in gas fuel consumption by 352 million metric standard cubic feet (MMSCF) per year. This clean energy utilization could generate efficiencies of up to USD 4.3 million per year.
Fadjar added that the 25 MWp PLTS is just the first phase. Pertamina plans to continue the development of the Rokan PLTS in a second phase, which is projected to reach up to 200 MWp.
"This PLTS is now operational, supporting energy security for Indonesia," he said.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
