Alpiq and RWE have signed an agreement for the direct marketing of RWE's onshore wind and hydro portfolio in Spain with a total capacity of 459 megawatts, including participation in ancillary services for the Spanish market. With this contract Alpiq is strengthening its position as a leading market agent for renewable assets in Spain.
In 2021, Alpiq will market a portfolio of 459 megawatts of wind and hydro plants owned by RWE in the Spanish power market. Alpiq will additionally grant access to ancillary services, proving that renewable energies support the balancing of needs in the Spanish power system.
After several years focused on market development for solar, combined heat & power (CHP) and biomass plants, this is the most relevant hydro and wind portfolio Alpiq will market in Spain. As a result, the asset portfolio marketed by Alpiq increases to 1500 megawatts of installed generation capacity in Spain. This includes Alpiq's own Plana del Vent combined cycle gas turbine plant (400 megawatts) in Tarragona.
Milestone for strengthening market position
This agreement with RWE is a milestone for Alpiq in Spain as well as on a European level. There are clear synergies in jointly operating renewable and thermal assets as the market advances into energy transition. Alpiq plans to expand and strengthen its position as a leading market agent for renewable assets in its European core markets.
The addition of this renewable production balances Alpiq's portfolio, which is expected to supply more than 1 TWh of electricity to industrial customers in Spain. In addition, Alpiq also supplies more than 4 TWh of gas to industrial customers and intends to strengthen its presence in the LNG market.
