Launch event of ENTSO-E and Solar Power Europe joint report on preparing the EU grid for future solar eclipses

July 8, 2015

On 20 March the European electricity grid passed with flying colours an unprecedented stress test. No one had experienced before the effects on the grid of a near to total solar eclipse taking place on a mostly sunny weekday morning with 90 gigawatts of solar power installed and highly concentrated in some regions. This was not just a Europe's first. I was a world's first. What remains to be done to successfully manage upcoming eclipses with close to an increasing number of PV connected to the system?

On 15 July, as the European Commission is launching its Summer Package on energy, ENTSO-E and Solar Power Europe are releasing a joint report on lessons learnt on 20 March 2015 but also looking forward to 2021, 2026 and beyond.

For ENTSO-E and Solar Power Europe meticulous preparation and cooperation across the electricity value chain will continue to be crucial. But implementation of network codes, stronger regional security coordination, more and more system services provided by prosumers, PV, and link up between distribution and transmission need to be set in place.

Paula Abreu Jackson, DG ENER, European Commission, Frauke Thies, Solar Power Europe, Ana Aguado, EDSO, and Susanne Nies, ENTSO-E, will debate on what needs to be done from the policy, generators and transmission point of view.
