SFPUC Receives National Award for 100 Years of Service: Agency honored by the American Public Power Association

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has received the Century Award from the American Public Power Association (APPA), an honor that celebrates the City's 100 years of producing clean, reliable energy for customers in San Francisco.

"We are honored to receive this recognition," said SFPUC General Manager Harlan L. Kelly Jr. "For a century, the City of San Francisco has received dependable, affordable and clean electricity service. We look forward to serving our customers for the next 100 years."

Established in 1987, the Century Award is given each year to public power utilities that have served their community continuously for 100 years. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Hetch Hetchy Power System generating greenhouse gas-free hydroelectricity, which is used to provide energy for San Francisco's streetlights, MUNI vehicles, schools, City Hall, the San Francisco Zoo, libraries, the San Francisco International Airport and more.

In 2016, the SFPUC expanded its electricity programs by launching CleanPowerSF, which provides renewable energy from sources like wind and solar to residents and businesses. CleanPowerSF powers more than 100,000 San Francisco residents and businesses today, a total that is expected to rise to 360,000 by next year. With the help of CleanPowerSF, San Francisco is well on its way to meeting the City's goals of reaching 50 percent renewable energy by 2020 and 100 percent renewable energy by 2030.

"Public power systems like the Hetch Hetchy Power System are an expression of the American ideal of local people working together to meet their community's needs," said Sue Kelly, President & CEO of APPA. "Like schools, parks, police and fire protection, they are governed locally and operated to provide an essential public service."

To celebrate 100 years of power, the SFPUC has led several public events and activities. Earlier this year, the agency hosted an interactive exhibit at SF History Day at the Old Mint, and in October, SFPUC representatives will lead an evening program on the history of the Hetch Hetchy Power System at the California Historical Society.

This week, SFPUC employees will be handing free sno-cones made from Hetch Hetchy water to residents and visitors across San Francisco. For more information on the event and sno-cone locations, visit www.ourcityourpower.org.
