NT Energy has opened the first public Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station in Hay River. The Hay River station is part of an EV station corridor that will eventually run from Yellowknife to the NWT/Alberta Border, when EV stations in other locations are completed. Funding for the projects is being provided by the federal and territorial governments.
The NWT Public Utilities Board has directed that regulated utilities (such as NTPC) cannot own/operate EV charging stations. NT Energy, the unregulated sister company of NTPC, will be the owner of this charging station as well as stations currently under construction in Fort Smith and Behchokǫ̀. FLO, a leading North American electric vehicle (EV) charging network operator and smart charging solutions provider, has been contracted to oversee servicing and maintenance of the equipment.
NT Energy's Hay River EV Charging Station is located on Capital Drive, in front of the headquarters for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC). This location is a short walk to the downtown core. There are two Level Three chargers and two Level Two chargers at this location. Access is available to the charging stations 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To encourage users to move their vehicles to free up the spaces after charging is complete, there will be a cost for idling in any of the charging spots.
Following a pricing model that has been used in other jurisdictions, NT Energy has set an hourly rate of $6/hour for Level Two charging and $33/hour for Level Three charging. The Level 3 chargers can supply up to 100 kW, and the Level 2 chargers can supply up to 19.2 kW. The fees will be billed in one-minute increments. Once the chargers have been operational for two years, the actual consumption, usage and operating costs will be reviewed and rates modified accordingly, if necessary.
NT Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of NT Hydro, which in turn is 100 percent owned by the Government of the Northwest Territories. It is a sister company of the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) and engages in projects and initiatives which are separate from NTPC activities regulated by the NWT Public Utilities Board.
Quote
"The addition of an EV Charging Station to the electricity infrastructure in the Town of Hay River will help encourage residents to consider purchasing an electric vehicle when they are next in the market for a new car or truck. The Town of Hay River recently announced that its entire Municipal Enforcement fleet is now 100% electric, and the charging station will be able to further support those vehicles."
