Indiana Michigan Power to Raise Reservoir Level at Elkhart Hydroelectric Plant

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) will start raising the water level upstream of the Elkhart Hydroelectric Plant on Monday, March 19.

The reservoir was lowered two feet last December to help reduce ice buildup and flooding upstream of the dam. The reservoir will be slowly raised about six inches per day over a three to four day period.

Those living along the St. Joseph River within eight miles upstream of the Elkhart generating station may wish to take note of this in case there is any work they would like to finish along the riverbank before the level rises.

The Elkhart hydroelectric facility is one of six run-of-river hydroelectric plants on the St. Joseph River owned and operated by I&M. The facility has a capacity of 3.44 megawatts, the equivalent of serving about 3,500 homes. I&M operates the Elkhart Hydroelectric Generating Station in accordance with its license issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
