The City is hoping to use geothermal energy to power its plans for expanding its agriculture sector into the future.
Moose Jaw City Council has given approval for an assessment of the City's geothermal assets.
At the regular meeting of Council Monday, January 25, 2021, Council ratified a motion to fund a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) of geothermal resources in Moose Jaw.
"The PEA allows potential investors and funding agencies to determine whether or not our geothermal resources are sufficient to facilitate agri-food production and other opportunities," explained Jim Dixon, Manager of Economic Development.
"Moose Jaw has enjoyed the benefits of geothermal water for decades and there may be more benefits on the horizon," said Fraser Tolmie, Mayor. "Our Council has pledged to aggressively seek economic opportunities for our city and this decision is in line with that goal. We look forward to seeing the results of the Assessment."
Council approved using the Land Reserve Fund to cover the $54,186.00 PEA cost, and the Assessment will not affect the 2021 Operating Budget.
