As part of the Alberta Municipal Solar Program, the City of Medicine Hat has installed a 4.5 kW solar PV system on the roof of the Medicine Hat Public Library, upgrading the 1 kW system that was installed in 2006.
"We are fortunate to have the most hours of sunshine in Canada," said Jaret Dickie, Manager of the City's Utilities Business Support Department. "This project aligns with our commitment to understanding the economic and environmental benefits of using alternative energy within the community."
Solar power is produced during the day, coinciding with peak electricity demand. This reduces the use of valuable natural gas to help meet these peak loads. The new solar PV system at the Medicine Hat Public Library helps increase awareness of the potential of renewable energy in the community.
This project was funded by the City's HAT Smart program in partnership with the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre and Terralta.
