Green Marine UK reaches 50th cable project milestone - supporting Offshore Wind and fast emerging Marine Energy sectors

October 16, 2024

Green Marine UK has registered a new company milestone after completing more than 50 complex cable operations for oil & gas, offshore wind and subsea datacentre sectors in addition to fast emerging Marine Energy technologies.

Projects were either fully managed by Green Marine UK or involved operations as a subcontractor with specific responsibilities for handling key elements of the cable works.

Standout projects include work with defence leader Naval Group supporting Microsoft's Project Natick, as well as Scottish tidal energy developers Orbital and Meygen, plus Swedish wave energy developer CorPower Ocean.

Recent contracts have involved cable (de)burial campaigns with 23 Degrees Renewables and Nexans for the Seagreen Wind Farm off Scotland. Further cable maintenance has been completed alongside Dutch outfit N-Sea at the Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm in North Wales.

Orkney-based Green Marine (UK) delivers specialist multicat vessels with experienced crews, who can be further supported with the firm's engineering department, OCM and bolt-on equipment to provide vessel charter all the way up to turnkey cable handling solutions.

Specific support for offshore cable projects includes vessel charter, CFE (Controlled Flow Excavation), trenching, cable lay, recovery and repair services, PLGR (Pre-lay Grapnel Run), cable pull-in and pull-out, DMC (Dry Mate Connector) jointing and splicing, connection & the fitting of cable protection and rockbagging.

Operating as a Principal Contractor, or providing Offshore Management to oversee operations, Green Marine UK's workscope also extends to Operational Engineering. This covers a wide variety of disciplines from production of procedures and engineering calculations to Orcaflex operational modelling and dynamic cable analysis.

Green Marine UK Operations Manager Terry Norquay said: "Green Marine UK have been supporting complex and multi-faceted cable operations for more than a decade, and we're now approaching our 50th significant project. It's a track record which spans across many offshore segments, and ultimately builds trust and confidence to drive future growth."

Other notable contracts include the installation and decommissioning of Sustainable Marine's tidal turbines in the Bay of Fundy, Canada, operating in one of the largest tidal shifts in the world. Further cable installation work was delivered in conjunction with 23 Degrees Renewables and Global Marine for BT's R100 North contract, designed to extend superfast broadband capabilities in the Northern and Western Isles of Scotland.

With a fleet of workboats, crew transfer vessels, and further expertise operating heavy lift and transportation barges, Green Marine UK's broad service offering extends to offshore survey work using hydrographic equipment for multi-beam surveys, complete with onshore data processing capabilities. It further delivers towage and salvage operations. Experienced crew are supported by a team of highly-qualified naval architects, offshore operations masters, project engineers, structural engineers and draughtsmen.

Green Marine MD Jason Schofield said there is a massive opportunity for the firm to grow in tandem with the UK's burgeoning offshore wind sector - which is the second-largest market in the world with plans to triple capacity to 50GW by 2030.

"In recent years Green Marine has fast advanced from a vessel charter business to one of the UK's leading marine services providers," he said. "By offering turnkey solutions we relieve a major headache for clients removing financial risk and complications associated with using multiple subcontractors."
