Fingrid's pilot project promotes the inclusion of wind power in the market for automatic reserve products. The reserve markets need wind power to manage power balance effectively in the future.
Fingrid uses various reserve products to maintain the balance between consumption and production in the power system. The rapid expansion of wind power in Finland is leading to situation where electricity production is largely generated by wind and nuclear power. As a result, wind power participation is important to ensure an adequate amount of reserves.
Three participants were chosen to Fingrid's Wind power for the Reserve Markets pilot: Enefit Green, Centrica Energy Trading and Prima Capital AG. Project will pilot all automated reserve products: the Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR), the Frequency Containment Reserve for Disturbances (FCR-D), the Frequency Containment Reserve for Normal Operation (FCR-N), and the Fast Frequency Reserve (FFR). Combined total wind power capacity participating is 550 MW.
The pilot project will be carried out in 2023 and continue in 2024 if necessary. The pilot project seeks to address some practical questions that wind power operators need to answer when joining the reserve market. Lessons learned will be used on a general level to develop the reserve markets.
