UW-Madison becomes final anchor tenant of Janesville community solar garden
University partners with Alliant Energy to advance renewable energy goals

The University of Wisconsin-Madison purchased nearly 1,900 solar blocks to become the final anchor tenant of Alliant Energy's Community Solar - Janesville.  

"We're thrilled to partner with University of Wisconsin-Madison, enabling the school to build toward its sustainability goals while also supporting our mission of delivering safe, reliable, renewable energy," said Josh Sherry, Alliant Energy's director of strategic projects.  

The Janesville-based solar garden began generating electricity in April 2025 and is part of the Alliant Energy® Community Solar program. Community solar allows subscribing electric customers to benefit from solar power without installing solar panels on their property. 

 "Working with our community partners is a win-win," said Cindy Torstveit, UW-Madison Associate Vice Chancellor of Facilities Planning & Management. "We are pleased to join this program as one step toward our goal of 100% renewable electricity by 2030." 
 
The 2.25-megawatt garden is the second community solar project Alliant Energy placed into operation in Wisconsin. The first, in Fond du Lac, began harnessing energy from the sun in January 2022.  

Through Alliant Energy's Community Solar program, electric customers subscribe to blocks of a solar garden and receive monthly bill credits based on the energy the project generates over its 20-year life. For this project, the company projects participants will earn credits of approximately $35 per block per year.
