We're collaborating with other partners to provide solar panels for select local nonprofit groups, helping them reduce energy costs and achieve their sustainability goals.
The Nonprofit Solar Project is accepting applications from nonprofit groups through Aug. 18 to obtain solar panels and installations for their locations. TEP is contributing $25,000 to the project, which will include technical support.
"Many of our nonprofit partners want to promote sustainability and reduce costs. This is a way that we can support that mission and help meet critical needs in this region," said Wendy Erica Werden, TEP's Manager of Community Investment and Philanthropy.
The project is an initiative of the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA) with Solar United Neighbors of Arizona, along with other private and corporate donors.
Because solar panels are a significant investment, many nonprofit organizations lack the funds to improve their infrastructure. With support from the project, the nonprofit organizations will be able to transition to solar energy, freeing up resources to provide more support to clients and marginalized communities.
"Many of our local nonprofit partners are navigating ongoing cuts from federal funding sources and other national opportunities. This is a long-term investment we are offering to support these groups," said Natalia Gabrielsen, CFSA's Senior Community Impact Manager.
This is the second round of funding from the project. In 2022, seven local nonprofit groups were selected to receive solar panels, with TEP committing $15,000 toward the first round. Last year, three of those groups completed their installations, including The Drawing Studio.
Frank Velásquez Jr., former Board President of The Drawing Studio and Founder of 4 Da Hood, said by reducing electricity costs, the group will be able to redirect resources toward expanding programs, including art classes for youth who wouldn't otherwise have access.
"This installation lights a path forward - not just for us, but for other nonprofits seeking solutions that enable greater investment in their core missions. This support not only powers our facility, it energizes our entire community," Velasquez said.
After applications are submitted, the project committee will identify top applicants in September and make final award notifications in November. Learn more about the grants.
