Leaders from the City of Middletown and clean energy stakeholders gathered today (Nov 19) to celebrate the completion of a solar energy project at a former landfill site located at 180 Johnson Street in Middletown. Developed by West Hartford-based Verogy, the 809 kW DC solar energy system will generate over 1 million kWh of clean energy annually, enough to power an estimated 105 homes per year.

The project, located on a 2.5-acre capped landfill, represents a powerful transformation of previously underutilized land into a productive, sustainable energy resource for the community. Each year, the project will offset an estimated 712 metric tons of carbon emissions equivalent to the greenhouse gases from 88,000 gallons of gasoline. The initiative aligns with Middletown's commitment to reducing environmental impacts, while simultaneously producing clean, renewable energy and saving taxpayer dollars.
Mayor Ben Florsheim of Middletown expressed the city's enthusiasm for this milestone achievement: "This solar installation marks an important step in our ongoing commitment to the environment and our residents. We know our community values sustainability, and this project exemplifies how we can meet those priorities in practical ways. Not only are we reducing our carbon footprint, but we're also lowering energy costs creating a cleaner, greener, and more economically sustainable future for Middletown."
