Verogy to Transform Three Connecticut Landfills into Solar Energy Hubs
Former landfills to be revitalized with clean energy for Connecticut consumers

February 23, 2024

Verogy, a leading solar energy developer based in West Hartford, Connecticut today (Feb 21) announced that the company has received permits from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to convert former landfills in Deep River, Middletown, and Montville, CT into sites that will host solar energy projects.  The capped landfills will now host solar projects with an aggregate size of 2.15 MW DC, and will produce over 2,600 MWh of zero carbon, clean energy annually - enough to power 252 homes for a year.

Landfills are often seen as environmental burdens to their communities.  Through Verogy, these parcels will be given a new lease on life and will be converted from underutilized sites into useful assets. In total, Verogy will redevelop more than seven acres of remediated land, bringing the properties back into productive use.

The recent approvals from CT DEEP reflect a core strategy of the company, which is to develop and prioritize opportunities to convert landfill sites into clean energy producing properties.

"Verogy is grateful to Connecticut DEEP's staff for their thoughtful review of our three landfill projects," said Will Herchel, CEO of Verogy.  "These projects mark a dual victory for the environment. First, by generating renewable energy, these projects will significantly reduce carbon emissions, contributing to the fight against climate change.  Second, the use of capped landfills for the projects represents an important achievement in land reclamation and sustainability."

Project details:

Deep River, CT

Project location:  206 Winthrop Road

System Size:  675 kW DC

Production: 838,875 kWh/year - enough to power 79 average homes for a year.

Environmental Benefits:  Verogy's Deep River project will remediate and cap a former 2.3-acre landfill, returning a once-contaminated site to productive use.

Carbon Offset: When energized, Verogy's Deep River project will offset 594 metric tons of carbon every year, the equivalent of the greenhouse gas emissions from nearly 67,000 gallons of gasoline.

Middletown, CT

Project location:  180 Johnson Street

System Size:  809 kW DC

Production: 1,005,264 kWh/year - enough to power 95 average homes for a year.

Environmental Benefits:  Verogy's Middletown project will remediate and cap a former 2.5-acre landfill, returning a once-contaminated site to productive use.

Carbon Offset: When energized, Verogy's Middletown project will offset 712 metric tons of carbon every year, the equivalent of the greenhouse gas emissions from more than 80,000 gallons of gasoline.

Montville, CT

Project location:  669 Route 163

System Size:  670 kW DC

Production: 831,942 kWh/year - enough to power 78 average homes for a year.

Environmental Benefits:  Verogy's Montville project will redevelop a former 2.4-acre landfill, returning a once-contaminated site to productive use.

Carbon Offset: When energized, Verogy's Montville project will offset 590 metric tons of carbon every year, the equivalent of the greenhouse gas emissions from over 66,000 gallons of gasoline.

"Verogy's commitment to sustainability is at the core of our landfill projects," added Herchel.  "By harnessing the power of the sun and revitalizing formerly unusable land, we are taking meaningful steps towards a cleaner, greener future in Connecticut.  We are excited about these great projects and look forward to finding even more opportunities to transform landfill sites into clean energy producing properties."
