Guam Power Authority Signs Contract for 60 MW Renewable Energy Project with Hanwha Energy Corporation

September 10, 2018

On Wednesday, August 22, 2018, the Guam Power Authority (GPA) entered into a renewable energy contract as part of its Phase II Renewable Acquisition of a 60 megawatt proposal with Hanwha Energy Corporation.

"A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between GPA and Hanwha will provide substantial savings to GPA ratepayers over the term of the contract based on current and projected Levelized Energy Adjustment Clause (LEAC) rates," stated GPA General Manager John M. Benavente, P.E. Hanwha will construct their renewable energy project in the Dandan area of Inarajan, Guam. It is projected to be operation and come online to Guam's island wide power system in 2021.

In total for August 2018, GPA inked two contracts for two renewable energy companies for a total of 120 megawatts of utility scale solar photovoltaics (PV), to meet a Renewable Portfolio Standard mandated by Guam public law wherein GPA must have 25 percent of its energy supplied by renewable technologies by 2035. GPA also signed a 60 megawatt Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and LG-CNS Consortium to construct a facility in the Sasajan area of Mangilao, Guam on August 24, 2018. Both projects are expected to be online by 2021; and will help GPA achieve and estimated savings of $43 Million in the first five-years of operations.
