PGE Renewable Development Fund awardee breaks ground on new senior house development, powered by solar

March 20, 2025

Northwest Housing Alternative and Urban League of Portland -began construction on a new senior housing development. This project will be equipped with renewable solar energy and battery storage devices that are funded by Portland General Electric's Renewable Development Fund.

PGE's Renewable Development Fund is made possible by Green Future participants, one of several voluntary renewable power programs that PGE offers to customers. Participants opt to pay a little more on their energy bill in support of renewable energy resource projects for local municipalities and organizations like Urban League of Portland and Northwest Housing Alternatives.

Northwest Housing Alternatives builds new homes and new opportunities for seniors, families, veterans and people with disabilities across Oregon. Urban League of Portland is one of Oregon's oldest civil rights and social service organizations offering culturally specific programs and services to empower Black communities to thrive in Oregon. Last week, the organizations held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new 63-unit affordable senior housing development, M. Carter Commons, located next to Kaiser's North Interstate medical campus and TriMet's Overlook Park MAX Station in Portland.

With awardee funding from PGE's 2023 Renewable Development Fund, the building is equipped with solar panels and battery storage devices, providing reliable, clean, and low-cost energy to seniors, in addition to backup renewable energy to be used in the case of an outage.

"We want to thank those PGE customers for participating in the Green Future's program, which provides the revenue for Renewable Development Fund projects like the one here at M Carter Commons," said Trell Anderson, executive director, Northwest Housing Alternatives.

Construction for the M Carter Commons building is expected to be completed in late Spring 2026.
