Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO:6502) announced that Toshiba Hydro Power (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd.(THPC), a Chinese subsidiary that manufactures, sells and maintains hydroelectric equipment, has won a major order to supply four units of 77-megawatt hydro turbine and generator for Myanmar Electric Power Enterprise's Upper Yeywa hydropower plant.
The contract, for the 308MW Upper Yeywa Hydropower Plant that Myanmar Electric Power Enterprise will construct northeast of Mandalay, recognizes Toshiba's high level technical capabilities and more than 120 years of experience in hydroelectric power generation. Deliveries to the project's EPC contractor, China's Zhejiang Orient Engineering Co., Ltd., will start in March 2016.
Toshiba Group previously supplied a hydraulic turbine for the 28.4MW Sedawgyi hydroelectric power plant in 1989, making this the second commission from Myanmar. Hydroelectricity is currently Myanmar's primary source of electricity, accounting for approximately 75% of the country's power supply. There are plans to build more power plants in Myanmar to meet growing energy needs triggered by the country's strong economic growth.
In 1894, Toshiba Group delivered the first Japanese-made 60kW hydroelectric generator to the Keage Power Station, Japan's first commercial hydroelectric power plant. Since then, Toshiba has supplied over 2,000 hydro power generators with over 56,000MW generating capacity around the world. Toshiba Group supports efforts to secure a stable global power supply with an energy portfolio of nuclear, thermal and renewable energy solutions, including hydroelectric, geothermal, wind and solar power systems.
