Marine Renewables Canada welcomes two new board directors

May 11, 2021

Marine Renewables Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members to its Board of Directors. The new directors bring experience from the broader energy industry that will assist the association in advancing the marine renewable energy sector across Canada.

"As Canada works to act on climate change and build its Blue Economy, marine renewable energy can support both endeavours," said Marine Renewables Canada executive director Elisa Obermann. "Building this new industry requires perseverance and leadership. That's why I am pleased to announce the appointment of new directors to our board: Marty Gaulin and John Wright their experience and enthusiasm will benefit the association and the sector."

Marty Gaulin is Vice President Tidal Energy Program with Sustainable Marine. He brings over 35 years of experience in engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and operations management in the energy sector. Marty started his career with Texaco Canada and Imperial Oil where he spent 10 years executing engineering and project management of upstream oil and gas projects from concept through to start up and operations. He then joined Colt Engineering/Worley and spent over 25 year leading teams in the execution of EPC projects for energy and resource companies in upstream oil and gas, downstream refining, offshore oil and gas, mining and power industries.

John Wright is Executive Director, Business Development with Northland Power, a Canadian based clean and renewable energy company with a 30+ year focus on successfully developing, building, owning and operating sustainable electricity generating assets across Canada and globally. In his role at Northland Power, John has been focussed on grid scale energy storage development and supporting Northland's offshore wind development interests in Canada and the US.

Their directorship terms began on January 1, 2021.

The executive committee has been expanded for 2021 with Jason Clarkson, President of Halifax Offshore Consulting assuming the role of Treasurer. He joins Chairman of the board, the Honourable Michel P. Samson, Counsel at Cox & Palmer and Vice Chair, Peter Huttges, Director of Ports and Coastal at Atlantic Towing.
