Xcel Energy has resumed work on the Cedar Falls Hydro Project, a long-term investment to strengthen and preserve the historic Cedar Falls dam near Menomonie.
Construction activity was intermittent since 2022 due to permitting delays, but work has resumed and crews are making progress across the site. Multiple crews are advancing work throughout the area and while the increased activity is visible, much of the work completed to date has occurred inside the dam and out of public view.
Over the past year, crews have installed a significant portion of the permanent rock anchor system designed to strengthen the dam's structure and placed several thousand cubic yards of concrete, including underwater concrete placements completed with the assistance of dive crews. These improvements are reinforcing the existing dam and laying the groundwork for future construction phases.
One of the first major external milestones will be the installation of a new spillway gate adjacent to the powerhouse, providing a visible indication of the project's progress. This is expected to be completed in 2027.
As construction continues, Xcel Energy is reminding residents that public safety remains a top priority. Portions of the project area will remain off limits during construction, and community members should follow posted signage, barriers and safety precautions. Residents can also expect continued construction-related traffic in the area.
