On Friday 30 January 2026, BRGM inaugurated its new premises in Fort-de-France. Modern, earthquake-proof and ideally located, they are designed to provide better working conditions for the team of 7 employees on site, and a new base from which to pursue BRGM's development on the island.
Nearly 60 years of support to meet Martinique's complex regional challenges
BRGM, the French geological survey, with offices in every region of mainland France and French overseas territories, has been in Martinique for almost 60 years.
A true natural treasure, Martinique is nevertheless subject to a number of hazards: earthquakes and tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, tropical cyclones, coastal erosion, landslides and sargassum beaching. Some of these phenomena are now exacerbated by climate change.
Water resource management also needs to be adapted to the new situation. Developing geothermal energy would help mitigate this, as well as boosting the island's energy autonomy
BRGM is deploying its scientific and technical skills to meet these challenges, as well as to protect the soil from pollution and improve knowledge of Martinique's subsurface, for the benefit of the island, its resilience and its inhabitants.
