MASSACHUSETTS MUNICIPAL WHOLESALE ELECTRIC COMPANY
MMWEC Enters Into Power Purchase Agreements for Maine Hydro Power

March 10, 2026

Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC), the Commonwealth's designated not-for-profit joint action agency for municipal utilities, is entering into power purchase agreements (PPAs) for hydropower on behalf of several Member municipal light plants (MLPs).

Fourteen MMWEC Member municipal light plants (MLPs) are participating in the PPAs with an affiliate of Brookfield Renewable North America for Maine-based hydropower. They include the MLPs located in the communities of Ashburnham, Boylston, Groton, Hull, Ipswich, Marblehead, Mansfield, Paxton, Russell, Shrewsbury, Sterling, Templeton, Wakefield and West Boylston.

The PPA is a five-year agreement, which commenced in February 2026, for firm hydro and the associated Maine Class II renewable energy credits from 16 individual units. The PPA calls for volumes of approximately 40,000 megawatt hours (MWh) in 2026; 102,000 MWh in 2027; 99,000 MWh in 2028; 108,000 MWh in 2029, and 85,000 MWh in 2030.

"This agreement demonstrates the commitment of MMWEC and its Project Participants in proactively decarbonizing their power portfolios in alignment with the Commonwealth's objectives," said MMWEC CEO Tom Barry. "This agreement provides participating MLPs with a reliable source of renewable energy while supporting MLP clean energy goals."
