3t Leads the Energy Transition with Groundbreaking Geothermal Simulation Technology

August 7, 2025

Highlights

  • 3t partners with Robert Gordon University to launch the UK's first Geothermal Simulation and Modelling Platform, aiming to transform renewable energy development.
  • This initiative marks 3t's strategic entry into the geothermal sector, repurposing North Sea oil and gas infrastructure and supporting the UK's decarbonisation goals through innovative training technology.
  • Clive Battisby, SVP at 3t Technologies, said: "This project firmly positions 3t's advanced simulation technology as a key player on the global energy stage and directly contributes to the UK's net zero ambitions."

3t , the leading safety-critical training and learning organisation for hazardous industries, is proud to announce a major new collaboration with Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Aberdeen to establish a world-leading Geothermal Simulation and Modelling Platform.

This transformative initiative marks a bold expansion of 3t into the renewable energy space, positioning it at the forefront of geothermal innovation, showcasing how industry-academia collaboration can accelerate innovation and decarbonisation.

Set to transform the geothermal energy sector in the UK and beyond, the initiative will adapt and enhance RGU's DrillSIM:5000 simulator to support Mid to Deep Single Geothermal Wells (MDSGW), bringing a new level of realism and training capability to geothermal drilling simulation. Underpinned by 3t's market-leading Drilling Systems simulation technology, the platform is designed to accelerate innovation, drive down costs, and build a skilled workforce to meet net zero goals.

Clive Battisby, Senior Vice President for 3t's Technologies service line, said: "By adapting our cutting-edge simulation technology for geothermal applications, we're not only expanding its potential but also helping to unlock a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. This project firmly positions 3t's advanced simulation technology as a key player on the global energy stage and directly contributes to the UK's net zero ambitions.

"This isn't just a technological upgrade, it's a strategic leap. By adapting our world-leading simulation technology for geothermal, we're unlocking new potential for clean energy and positioning 3t at the heart of the global energy transition."

The platform will provide realistic geothermal drilling scenarios in a safe, controlled environment, with the potential to reduce the cost of geothermal wells by up to 50%. This will make clean heat solutions more accessible and commercially viable, while opening opportunities to repurpose North Sea oil and gas infrastructure, helping reduce environmental impact and supporting a just transition for the energy workforce.

In addition to driving industry innovation, the platform will serve as a training hub for students and professionals, equipping the next generation of energy talent with the skills required to lead the UK's clean energy transformation.

Phil Hassard of RGU's Energy Transition Institute added: "This partnership exemplifies what's possible when academia and industry collaborate. With 3t's cutting-edge drilling simulation technology and RGU's research excellence, we're unlocking the future of clean and scalable geothermal energy.

"Beyond innovation, this project reinforces Scotland's shared commitment to accelerating the transition to sustainable energy, strengthening both local and national efforts to build a resilient, low-carbon future."

The collaboration aligns with the UK Government's Green Industrial Strategy, the Scottish Government's Heat in Buildings Strategy, and the Renewables Export Framework, further strengthening a longstanding partnership between 3t and the Robert Gordon University.

Recognised globally, 3t's advanced simulation technologies, 3t Drilling Systems, is the world number one drilling and well control simulation technology provider, working with academic institutions, drilling contractors, oil and gas operators, service providers, and training companies around the globe to enhance their operations through improved safety and competence.

This pioneering platform cements 3t's role at the forefront of the clean energy transition and reflects both organisations' shared commitment to advancing technologies, skills, and partnerships essential to achieving the UK's climate ambitions.
