MOCEAN ENERGY
Ocean energy agreement targets zero carbon power for subsea applications

September 4, 2024

Mocean Energy and SubCtech will explore how wave and solar generation can be coupled with batteries to deliver continuous low carbon power and communications to a range of subsea technologies.

A wide range of subsea technologies of the future can potentially be powered by renewable energy, and this has been given further weight following an agreement announced today (Sept 3).

Scottish ocean energy pioneers Mocean Energy are to work closely with German subsea and marine technology leaders SubCtech, with the goal of developing customisable ocean power and monitoring solutions, powered solely by wave, sun and battery technologies at the point of use, solving complex and challenging projects.

Mocean Energy has already demonstrated how their wave and solar powered Blue X wave energy converter prototype can be coupled with battery storage to deliver reliable green power, via the successful pan-industry Renewables for Subsea Power programme, whilst SubCtech has a long track record in manufacturing a range of subsea equipment, including batteries and monitoring equipment, with uses as diverse as greenhouse gas monitoring and micro-plastic sampling.

The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) pledging to pool their expertise and to seek potential collaborative projects which will bring together their respective technologies and know-how, and deliver standalone, customisable low carbon subsea solutions for a range of customers globally. The MoU also commits the firms to share system engineering and analysis and to offer engineering support where appropriate.

Ian Crossland, commercial director at Mocean Energy, says:

"The energy industry is now moving rapidly towards innovative technologies that can deliver low carbon solutions for subsea and for the wider blue economy.

"We are delighted to be collaborating with SubCtech to create and provide customizable ocean power and monitoring solutions for a global market, and we are already working together towards delivering significant value to this growing customer base."

Stefan Marx, CEO of SubCtech, says:

"Renewable energy is becoming increasingly important for various offshore activities. With a partner like Mocean Energy, the enormous potential of wave energy can be utilised. Both companies have successfully already tested larger systems in-situ. For customers, this means a reliable energy supply from a single source: energy generation and storage provided with a vast amount of engineering experience.

"With Mocean Energy and SubCtech, two field-experienced companies fit together and perfectly meet customer needs."

Mocean Energy

Mocean Energy designs and delivers ocean energy technology to provide clean, carbon-free, renewable power.

Established in Scotland during 2015, Mocean Energy's successful hybridisation of wave energy with solar power, supplemented by energy storage, have been a key part of its efforts to provide a more capable ocean energy platform for continuous power and communications delivery.

With main offices in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, with additional satellite offices throughout the UK, Mocean Energy is developing scalable core wave energy technology which will feed additional markets, from islands to national energy grids.

SubCTech

SubCtech is a leading company for Li-ion batteries for surface and especially underwater vehicles, such as AUV, as well as for offshore subsea batteries. SubCtech offers the first fully API17F / UN T38.3 certified ESS (Energy Storage System) providing 1 MWh per battery skid (up to 6 skids can be combined, totalling 6MWh).

The ocean monitoring side of the business provides environmental water measurement systems for ships (FerryBoxes) as well as for subsea inspections including gas sensors for CO2, CH4 and a vast variety of different highly accurate sensors for scientific measurements.

Founded in 2010, the company has an international customer base with a long track record, is still fully privately owned steadily growing with presently 75 employees.
