ONTARIO
Centre Wellington Township welcomes our first car charging station

December 8, 2016

The Township in partnership with Centre Wellington Hydro is excited to announce the arrival of a public charging station for electric cars.  This station is located at the Tourist & Information Centre in Elora.  The station will service both battery electric cars and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

"We are pleased to contribute to the environmental awareness and responsibility that Centre Wellington has become known for by helping to reduce transportation emissions.  We have been told that there are 7,573 electric vehicles presently on the road in Ontario, and we are hoping they all take the opportunity to make their way to Elora to plug in and enjoy our community!" said Mayor Kelly Linton.

In spring 2016, the government of Canada invested $20 million in public charging infrastructure.  As a result, Ontario's charging infrastructure will expand by an additional 500+ stations over the next two years.  Over 200 of these stations will be fast charging stations that will top-up an electric car from empty to full in 20-30 minutes.

"CW Hydro is excited to work with the Township to install the first Electric Vehicle (EV) charger in the township" said Wayne Dyce, President of Centre Wellington Hydro.  "The province wants to shift to low- or zero-emission vehicles which will be vital to achieving Ontario's greenhouse gas pollution reduction target of 80 per cent.  The charging unit installed at the Tourism building will give us the opportunity to collect data on the increased electrical demand from the chargers on our transformers, as well as information on charging habits of drivers and costs associated with charging EV's in public areas".
