NORTHERN POWERGRID
£1 Million Investment to Enable a Cleaner, Greener York

June 10, 2024

Northern Powergrid has completed its work on James Street, part of a £1 million investment in York's power network.

The work forms part of the network operator's wider £53m green investment programme and supports the city's plans to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

As well as improving the resilience of the local electricity network, this essential work has created the capacity needed for York's main bus operator, First Bus to manage charging of its fully electric fleet at the James Street depot.

Sarah Sheady, Northern Powergrid's Project Manager said: "Our investment has provided a major boost to the electricity infrastructure in York city centre.

"As well as creating the additional capacity First Bus needs to charge its fleet of electric buses, these vital network upgrades will future proof the network for generations to come.

"We'd like to thank local residents and businesses for their patience and support while we completed this important work".

Craig Brown, Head of Engineering at First Bus in North Yorkshire, said: "Our James Street depot has entered a new era and is leading a green transport revolution in York.

"The work by Northern Powergrid in delivering the required connection upgrade has enabled the depot to become one of the first outside London to be fully electric and will satisfy our power needs long into the future."

Northern Powergrid is investing £53m in vital local electricity networks as part of a national scheme that aims to accelerate the growth of green projects and stimulate the economy. A total of 14 projects in 17 locations across the region are set to benefit.
