The three independent leads responsible for the review of NB Power have released their final report and recommendations.
Entitled Fit for the Future - A Comprehensive Review of NB Power, the report contains 50 recommendations to help shape decisions for the future of the utility.
"We have tried to develop recommendations that will serve the best interests of New Brunswickers," said Michael Bernstein, one of the review leads. "They are based on our understanding of the specific challenges and circumstances of NB Power. Some of the recommendations will be easier to implement, while others are more complex and will take time."
"Our report informs of the harsh realities that government and NB Power are facing and reveals a series of interconnected issues, meaning that a single solution will not suffice," said fellow lead Anne Bertrand. "Our recommendations intend to balance the many interests and goals with a series of actions that shape the best way forward. NB Power remains closely linked to every community and sector of this province, and it is vital that government and NB Power work together and agree on how to best implement our recommendations."
"After a very detailed review we have tried to set out a number of actionable recommendations that we feel will allow early progress in areas that will be beneficial to all New Brunswickers," said fellow lead Duncan Hawthorne. "This is a big challenge for all, but, with a united front, we should approach the future with optimism."
The recommendations highlight opportunities for improvement in five key areas:
- implementing a better governance framework
- modernizing rules and regulations
- changing the culture
- implementing a long-term energy policy
- recognizing that nuclear is in a category of its own
The public is invited to review the final report, which is available online.
The government announced its plan for the review in April 2025. The review team began its work in May, and was responsible for gathering and analyzing data, conducting public engagement and developing recommendations based on its findings.
