The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, in partnership with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (NL Hydro), is pleased to announce an additional investment of $3.8 million to expand the province's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure network. NL Hydro has also invested $463,000 to support this expansion.
The project will see the construction of four fast charging stations (up to 120 kW) in 2026 in L'Anse-au-Loup and Port Hope Simpson the first ever EV fast chargers located in Southern Labrador.
This project will also see an additional 10 new Ultra-Fast EV chargers (up to 400 kW) installed in 2026. These will be among the fastest in North America and will be the fastest in Atlantic Canada, capable of charging compatible EVs to up to 80 per cent in as little as 20 minutes. These new chargers will be strategically located to respond to high levels of usage at existing charging sites, add EV charging capability to new locations in the province, and support regional connectivity. Locations include St John's East (2), Carbonear (2), Grand Falls-Windsor (2), Corner Brook (2), and Hawke's Bay (2).
NL Hydro is now accepting applications from forward-thinking local businesses within these communities that are interested in becoming a Site Host for this new round of chargers and who are ready to support a cleaner, more connected Newfoundland and Labrador.
This announcement builds on the initial 11 Ultra-Fast chargers scheduled for installation by the end of 2025, and which also received funding through Natural Resources Canada's Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP).
Completion of this project will boost EV charging capacity and bring the total number of public Fast EV chargers to 62, which includes 21 Ultra-Fast EV chargers in locations throughout the province.
In addition to the fast chargers in place and planned, there are over 220 public and private sector-owned level 2 charging ports (up to 19.2 kW) at sites such government facilities, hotels, shopping areas, restaurants, and office buildings.
Transportation accounted for 44 per cent of Newfoundland and Labrador's greenhouse gas emissions in 2023. Increased EV usage is a direct way to reduce these emissions towards a cleaner future.
The provincial EV charging infrastructure initiative is supported with $3.8 million announced in Budget 2025; $1.9 million in 2025-26, and $1.9 million in 2026-27.
Quotes
"There are now 1,700 Battery Electric Vehicles registered in vehicles in Newfoundland and Labrador - a 1,400 per cent increase over the past decade. Increasing access to the number of Ultra-Fast electric vehicle chargers across the province ensures we have the necessary infrastructure to accommodate the growing EV community and goes hand-in-hand with our commitment to lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduce our carbon footprint and work collaboratively with our partners to create a greener transportation sector."
Honourable Dr. Scott Reid, Minister of Environment and Climate Change
"With 21 Electric Vehicles in our fleet, Hydro is proud to support electric vehicle ownership in our province, and with more than 90% renewable electricity generated in Newfoundland and Labrador, this is a great place to drive electric. EV use is one driving force behind the need for more renewable electricity last month, our charging network set a record for monthly usage reaching more than 2,800 sessions. The addition of these Ultra-Fast Chargers is the next frontier for EV travel in our province-cutting charging time in half, reducing wait times, and all while contributing to a more sustainable future for Newfoundland and Labrador."
