Through this RFP, CPS Energy plans to own and operate two battery storage sites and create a microgrid to provide additional resiliency for customers and critical infrastructure. These battery energy storage systems will be located in the East and Southern portions of San Antonio. The goal is to have the projects operational by the second quarter of 2028.
A microgrid can remain connected to the main utility grid or disconnect and operate independently in "island mode" during prolonged power outages, extreme weather, or other grid disturbances.
The BESS and microgrid proposed through CPS Energy's RFP are part of the Community Energy Resiliency program, which is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The program focuses on grid innovation to meet the region's growing energy needs.
