EDF optimises 114MW of battery systems for Constantine Energy Storage, driving the UK's energy transition

February 24, 2025

Highlights

  • EDF partners with Constantine Energy Storage to deliver battery optimisation for two new-build assets, totalling 114MW in Cheshire and North Wales.
  • EDF's Powershift platform will maximise revenue generation and efficiency, as well as providing crucial flexibility to the Britain's electricity grid
  • Constantine Energy Storage, launched by Constantine Group in 2021 with Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) and Railpen taking a 94% stake in 2022, is rapidly expanding its portfolio of battery storage systems, driving the UK's clean energy revolution.

EDF has entered a new partnership with Constantine Energy Storage, agreeing to provide route-to-market and optimisation services for two new build battery assets, totalling 114MW. The Capenhurst (Cheshire) and Legacy (North Wales) battery sites, each with a capacity of 57MW, will utilise EDF's Powershift platform to maximise revenue generation across Ancillary Services, Wholesale Energy Trading, and the Balancing Mechanism.

This collaboration marks the first time EDF, Britain's biggest optimiser of batteries, has partnered with Constantine Energy Storage and represents a shared commitment to advancing the UK's clean energy infrastructure. Constantine Energy Storage, founded in 2021 by Constantine Group, was established to manage the construction and ownership of a portfolio of battery energy storage systems. These two battery assets are part of Constantine's wider development portfolio, positioning the company as a key player in the UK's energy storage sector.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can be operated efficiently on the Balancing Mechanism, making it easier and more cost-effective for the National Electricity System Operator (NESO) to balance the energy on the grid. This ultimately leads to savings for domestic users, enhancing the overall economic viability of renewable energy solutions.

The Capenhurst and Legacy battery storage systems are designed with an extended duration of 2.7 hours, compared to the typical 1-2-hour systems, offering enhanced flexibility to the UK's electricity grid. Once operational, these assets will provide essential grid support and enable Constantine Energy Storage to maximise their value through EDF's long-term optimisation strategy.

Stuart Fenner, Director of Wholesale Market Service Commercial, at EDF said: "We are delighted to be working with Constantine Energy Storage on these innovative battery projects. As first-time partners, we are excited to combine our market-leading optimisation expertise with Constantine's forward-thinking approach to energy storage. The extended duration of these assets will provide crucial flexibility to the grid, and our Powershift platform will ensure they generate maximum value in all market conditions."

EDF is Britain's biggest generator of zero carbon electricity and a market leader in the provision of battery optimisation services, with over 2 GW of battery assets under contract in the UK. This new partnership with Constantine Energy Storage further solidifies EDF's role as a key player in the UK's low-carbon energy landscape.

About EDF

EDF is helping Britain achieve Net Zero by leading the transition to a cleaner, low emission, electric future and tackling climate change. It is the UK's largest producer of zero carbon electricity and supplies millions of customers with electricity and gas.

It generates low carbon electricity from five nuclear power stations and more than thirty onshore wind farms and two offshore wind farms. Since 2009, EDF has invested almost £8 billion in the nuclear fleet to improve reliability and extend station lifetimes. The five generating stations currently supply about 14% of the UK's electricity demand.

EDF is leading the UK's nuclear renaissance with the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C. We also continue to support a replica plant at Sizewell C in Suffolk, which is now majority owned by the UK government. Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C will provide low carbon electricity to meet 14% of UK demand and power around 12 million homes.

EDF is one of the UK's largest investors in renewables, with more than 1.5GW of renewable generation in operation and over 14GW in construction, planning and development across a range of technologies including onshore and offshore wind, solar and battery storage. We are constructing our largest offshore wind farm in Britain - the 450 MW Neart na Gaoithe project in Scotland.

EDF is helping its customers, both in business and at home, take their first steps to sustainably powering their lives, whether it is buying an electric car, generating and storing electricity, selling energy back to the grid or installing solar panels or a heat pump. EDF is one of the largest suppliers to British business and a leading supplier of innovative energy solutions that are helping businesses become more energy independent. In addition, the company's energy services business, Dalkia, is one of the largest technical service providers in the UK and Ireland.

EDF is part of EDF Group, the world's biggest electricity generator. In the UK, the company employs around 14,000 people at locations across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
