Puget Sound Energy opens new Port of Anacortes EV charging station

March 6, 2024

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) and the Port of Anacortes are partnering to bring a new electric vehicle charging station to the port's Cap Sante Marina this week (Feb 27).

This continues PSE's expansion of the Up & Go Electric program, created to provide the charging and utility infrastructure to advance the market's transformation to electrified transportation.

The Port of Anacortes stimulates private job creation and commerce while also protecting the quality of life, needs and desires of area residents.

"PSE is proud to partner with the Port of Anacortes as we both work to be responsible stewards of public resources and our environments," Aaron August, PSE senior vice president and chief customer and transformation officer said. "The growing demand for electric charging stations in the Puget Sound region has continued over the last several years. This charging station is part of our ongoing effort toward providing much needed charging and utility infrastructure, while also expanding transportation electrification benefits throughout the region."

The new station will be maintained by PSE and features two DC fast charging ports and four Level 2 charging ports that can charge almost any type of electric car, truck or SUV. The station is located at the marina and will be open 24/7 to all drivers, regardless of whether they are PSE customers.

This is the fifth of at least eight charging stations PSE is planning to open across its service area, the first was opened in Lacey September 2020. PSE also plans to open two more this spring in Sumner and Bremerton.

Sustainability is the focus for both PSE and the port, which was instrumental in bringing this newest charging station to Anacortes.

"We are pleased to partner with PSE to bring this public amenity to marina customers and to our community," said Port of Anacortes Interim Executive Director John Dumas. "Sustainability is key to our mission, and the electric charging station is an exciting new part of the port's enduring work to support a healthy environment and a high quality of life in Anacortes and the region."

Like at all of PSE's Up & Go Electric public charging stations, the electricity used will be matched with 100% renewable energy via PSE's Green Power program.

PSE has opened public charging stations in Lacey, Kent, Bellingham, and Olympia and plans to open more stations in other cities where infrastructure is needed to help meet customer demand for more charging options. In addition to these stations, EV chargers are currently being installed at workplaces, multifamily residences, and fleets through other Up & Go Electric programs.

Fast and convenient
The station is located at the Port of Anacortes' Cap Sante Marina, easily accessible from I-5 and features two Level 2 and two DC fast charging ports to accommodate charging by four EVs simultaneously. The DC fast chargers can fully charge an EV in less than an hour.

A greener way to charge
Electricity used at the station is matched with 100% renewable energy through our Green Power program, setting our Up & Go Electric public charging stations

All drivers - not just our customers - can use the Up & Go Electric app to take advantage of simple mobile payment options, monitor their charging session remotely, and more. They can also activate the charger without downloading the app.

PSE will target reducing carbon emissions to net zero and go beyond by helping other sectors to enable carbon reduction across the state of Washington. Partnering with customers like this helps PSE engage more people in that mission.

Our Up & Go Electric program wants to make it as easy as possible for customers to save money and help the environment by accelerating widespread transportation electrification. To learn more about EVs and Up & Go Electric, visit pse.com/electric vehicles.
