RenewableUK sets out key measures for Energy Independence Bill to cut costs and boost energy security

May 14, 2026

RenewableUK is recommending a number of key measures for the Government to include in its Energy Independence Bill, which was announced in the King's Speech today. RenewableUK's CEO Tara Singh said:

"This Bill is a real opportunity to cut electricity bills and strengthen energy security by further lowering the cost of building renewables.

"That means removing avoidable delays in planning, changing the tax treatment of wind projects so that investment costs can be recovered earlier - reducing financing costs and the price power is sold at - and legislating for a national hydrogen network to unlock long duration energy storage.

"The prize of getting this right is cheaper, more secure energy built here in Britain, and less exposure to gas price shocks beyond our control."
