NV Energy presented a plaque and check today (Feb 26) to University Medical Center (UMC) during its board meeting representing the incentive savings from its two new large-scale infrastructure replacement and energy efficiency projects. Through NV Energy's energy efficiency programs, UMC was able to complete two projects in 2024 which included retrofitting its main central plant and the trauma center central plant, and the addition of variable frequency drives to various HVAC equipment.
With these two energy efficiency projects, UMC reduced its energy costs and improved operations while helping to protect the environment. The overall savings for UMC are equivalent to 3,020 metric tons of carbon dioxide and are equal to greenhouse gas emissions from 704 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year. This is equivalent to CO2 emissions from approximately 3 million pounds of coal burned, or 421 homes energy use for one year. The greenhouse gas emissions avoided by completing this project is approximately 1,000 tons of waste recycled instead of landfilled.*
Additionally, UMC achieved an annual kilowatt hour savings of 5,241,001, and a diverted demand savings of 335 kW, resulting in a lower strain on Nevada's power grid during peak times. To acknowledge this massive achievement, UMC received a check from NV Energy during its monthly Governing Board meeting that represented incentive savings totaling more than $182,000.
"This incredible milestone would not have become a reality without the full support of everyone at UMC who was involved in this remarkable partnership. Thank you to everyone supporting these projects and who participated either directly or indirectly in NV Energy's energy efficiency program," said Tony Sanchez, Executive Vice President, Business Development and External Relations at NV Energy. "We look forward to the future as we are confident there will be many more opportunities for further collaboration on additional projects."
"As UMC continues to invest in the future of health care for our community, we take pride in working alongside trusted community partners like NV Energy to achieve our shared goals," said UMC CEO Mason Van Houweling. "These energy efficiency projects will provide long-term savings for UMC, supporting our mission to further elevate the level of care available in our community."
